Plasma nitriding is a thermochemical surface hardening process conducted at relatively low temperatures, normally comprised between 400 and 550 °C in a gaseous mixture of nitrogen (N2) and hydrogen (H2).

Through plasma technology the atoms of the gas are accelerated towards the surfaces of the pieces by means of strong electrical forces.
